HISTORY
The Greggs building, originally known as the Otago Steam Coffee Mills building, has a long and storied history. Built in 1878 by coffee merchant and entrepreneur Thomas Gregg, it became a derelict warehouse in the 1970s before becoming the epicentre of the famous Dunedin Sound. Bands such as The Clean, The Chills, and Netherworld Dancing Toys all practised there in the late 1970s and 1980s.
The story of this building is Dunedin’s story — from grand and optimistic colonial ambitions, through a long period of neglect and stagnation to a new optimism and an appreciation of the significance of Dunedin’s historic buildings and the importance they represent to Dunedin’s cultural history.
