“The building is a pleasing addition to those in which the local industries of Dunedin are carried on, and is especially worthy of notice as being intended for the prosecution of a totally new one.”
Otago Witness, 28 September, 1878.
The Greggs building, originally known as the Otago Steam Coffee Mills building, has a long and storied history. Built in 1878 by coffee merchant and entrepreneur Thomas Gregg, it became a derelict warehouse in the 1970s before becoming the epicentre of the famous Dunedin Sound. Bands such as The Clean, The Chills, and Netherworld Dancing Toys all practised there in the late 1970s and 1980s.
The story of this building is Dunedin’s story — from grand and optimistic colonial ambitions, through a long period of neglect and stagnation to a new optimism and an appreciation of the significance of Dunedin’s historic buildings and the importance they represent to Dunedin’s cultural history.
SEE & DO
With the waterfront on the doorstep, opportunities abound for fishing, paddleboarding, kayaking, or exploring the stunning Dunedin harbour via the Otago Peninsula cycleway. Just metres away are two of Dunedin’s best seafood restaurants — Plato and Harbourside Grill — both within the Steamer Basin area. The Thomas Gregg is literally the only option for CBD waterfront accommodation in. We look forward to hosting you!
“Our apartment had the WOW factor from the moment we walked in. The building itself is an amazing warehouse conversion. The open plan layout, the gorgeous bedrooms and bathrooms, the amazing kitchen were all incredible and highly functional. The apartment was beautifully styled and fitted out with everything a visitor would need. Lush bedding and incredible industrial warehouse details throughout made this an absolute favourite place to stay for us. Highly recommended!”
